Generative AI tools are increasingly being used for journaling, reflection and self-inquiry. For some they offer a helpful way to slow down thinking, surface patterns, or generate questions. I’m exploring and designing evidence-informed protocols for using AI in adult development and learning.

This guide is an experimental, non-exhaustive starting point for reflective practice.

This guide covers

  1. What reflection is and why it is important
  2. How AI contributes to reflection
  3. A step-by-step protocol for engaging with AI
  4. Tips for effective prompting, including sample prompts
  5. Additional resources for reading and research

I don’t assume that AI is necessary, neutral or inevitable. This guide does not frame AI as inherently helpful or harmful. In this guide I offer principles and practices for those who choose to experiment with AI as a support for reflection, while remaining rooted in human agency, wellbeing and developmental integrity.
